Reading Review Part A (LIBE 477)

Question: What topics, ideas or “keywords” are you interested in exploring through some literature searches? What is in your professional practice or environment that you would like to explore further about digital technologies, web 2.0, or 21st-century learning?

(TL;DR- Keywords/topics of interest to me: ethical online behaviour and increased engagement with digital resources)

At my school we have had many cases of online bullying among our students this year.  Previously there had always been a few over the course of the whole year, but since Spring Break alone there are have been 5 reported incidents that have required school intervention or staff notifications (eg “watch/listen for ____ among your students because ___ has been reported to us, and discuss online behaviour”)

For this reason, one area of interest to me is ethical online behaviour- how can we encourage our students and future leaders to choose respectful actions over attention-getting, or negative actions?  How can we show students to respectfully disagree with something someone else posts/says online?

Many students have spent a great deal of their time on social media apps over the past 2 years, and it’s now an essential part of their daily routines. It’s part of their morning, afternoon and bedtime rituals. With dozens of different apps and new ones making their way into the mainstream every week, this is an essential question for me.

Another area of interest for me is engagement with our digital resources.  While most of my students know about our online resources via the SLLC, they are not the go-to for my students when they are looking for information about a learning topic, or when they want to read a book that isn’t available for them in hardcopy. A recent project with my students about ecosystems and animal adaptations required them to use the internet to find information specific to their interests. Despite taking time to show the students some of the online resources they have free access to via our SLLC (eg World Book Kids, Coyote Science, National Geographic Kids), the majority of my students chose to do a google search and ended up using resources written beyond their current reading comprehension level.

How can we encourage students to make these resources their first stop when they are looking for information?  How can we encourage students to borrow casual reading books from the digital library?

  1. This is a good first post.  You are asking great questions and have identified strong areas for future research. For your next post, I encourage you to include multimedia elements (hyperlinks, images, videos).  These add another layer for your reader.
